Medicines Optimisation

The role of the Medicines Optimisation team is twofold; the clinical and cost effective use of medicines, and the safe and secure handling of medicines.

The CCG's Medicines Optimisation team is divided into two operational divisions:

  • Clinical delivery services
  • Specialist services.

The two teams provide dedicated clinical support to optimise the use of medicines by promoting cost effective and evidence based clinical practice and effective risk management.

Medicines are the most frequent healthcare intervention in the NHS.  Treatments involving medicines are continually increasing in both complexity and cost.  There are substantial health benefits from appropriate medicines use, but also potential risk to patients and high costs to the organisation from inappropriate use.

Medicines optimisation is about helping health professionals and patients make the right treatment choices. The goal is to optimise the use of medicines by promoting cost effective and evidence based clinical practice and effective risk management.

Note: responsibility for community pharmacy sits with the NHS Commissioning Board (NHS England). Find local pharmacies on the NHS Choices website.
