If you’re at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes you may be eligible for your local Healthier You service. This service will help you to make changes to your diet, weight and the amount of physical activity that you do. Taking action now is very important as it can significantly reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a very serious health condition but there are lots of things you can do to reduce your risk of developing it.

If you are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, your local Healthier You service can help you put your health back in your hands and reduce your risk.

The first thing you need to do is find out if you are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Who is at risk?

Anyone can develop Type 2 diabetes, but certain factors can increase your risk:

  • You’re more at risk if you are white and over 40 or if you’re over 25 and African-Caribbean, Black-African, Chinese or South Asian
  • You’re two to six times more at risk if you have a parent, child, brother or sister with diabetes
  • You’re more at risk if you are Chinese, South Asian, African-Caribbean or Black-African
  • You’re more at risk if you’re overweight, especially around the middle, or if you’ve ever had high blood pressure
  • You’re more at risk if you’ve ever had a heart attack or stroke, if you’ve ever had schizophrenia, bipolar illness or depression, or if you are receiving treatment with anti-psychotic medication
  • And you’re more at risk if you are a woman who has had polycystic ovaries, gestational diabetes, or given birth to a baby weighing over 10 pounds.

You can’t change some of these risk factors. But others you can.

If you’re currently at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes you may be eligible for your local Healthier You service. This service will help you put your health back in your hands by supporting you to make changes to your diet, weight and the amount of physical activity that you do. Taking action now is very important as it can significantly reduce your risk of, or even stop you, developing Type 2 diabetes.

What help can I get?

If you are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes you could be eligible for help from the Healthier You service. They can support you to put your health back in your hands and reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. You’ll get the chance to meet other people looking to lower their risk and may be able to speak to trained professionals online and over the phone too.

We know it can be tough to make lifestyle changes but with the right help it is possible to make the simple changes that can significantly reduce your risk, or even stop you developing Type 2 diabetes in the first place. Do it for yourself and also do it for the people who care about you.

Here’s how you can be referred to your local Healthier You service:

  • Your GP or nurse may have told you that you are at a high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Ask them to refer you to your local Healthier You service
  • You may have discovered in your NHS Health Check that you are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Ask the Health Check professional to refer you to your local Healthier You service.
  • You may have had your risk assessed at a local event or on the Diabetes UK website. If you have been advised to, ask your practice nurse to arrange the necessary blood tests and refer you to your local Healthier You service, if the test confirms that you are at a high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
